As electricity demand increases due to electrification, and intermittent supply increases with more renewables, mass amounts of energy storage will be needed to support grid infrastructure for a stable, clean energy supply. Current options for energy storage like lithium batteries are too expensive for long-duration storage. The Aqua-Cell battery meets this demand using a salt water chemistry that can provide a stable energy source at scale.
Our flow battery pumps salt water through a battery stack where electricity is applied to store energy storage in the salt water. When this process is run in reverse, it generates usable electricity. Using low cost salt water as the electrolyte allows for affordable long duration energy storage (12h+).
Our technology leverages existing water-treatment technology and supply chains which has allowed us to scale up rapidly. It is safer, more sustainable, and cheaper than existing alternatives like lithium or pumped hydro storage.
